Tree pruning

It is very important to employ a qualified and experienced arborist to prune your trees. At treeworks we will discuss each of your tree’s individual ability to tolerate pruning.

Correct pruning

-should be started from an early age if possible
-is done at the right time of year
-promotes aesthetically pleasing structures
-removes dangerous, broken or damaged branches
-does not damage the branch collar or branch bark ridge
-gives the tree the best chance for recovery
-allows light to penetrate the canopy
-leaves a natural shape

Incorrect pruning

-reduces the life of the tree or kills it
-makes it more dangerous
-promotes abundant reaction shoots
-gives you less light within one growing season than what you started with
-destroys the trees natural defence system
-destroys the trees dignity and beauty

Different types of pruning include

-Dead wooding, this is the careful removal of any dead potentially dangerous branches that are still attached to the tree
-crown reductions e.g. a 1.5 meter reduction means that the outer branches of the tree have been shorted by 1.5m. This allows more light to get passed the tree while keeping a natural shape
-crown reshaping, this is when only a certain portion of the tree is being reduced, e.g. if a part of a tree is growing into a house
-crown thinning, pruning of the inner branches to allow more light to penetrate the canopy
-crown raising, pruning off the lower branches, this allows more head room and can allow for a better view of your tree
-topping, an awful practice on broad leaved trees that encompasses all the outcomes of incorrect pruning.

Tree felling and removal

Unfortunately some trees have to be completely removed. At treeworks.ie we have a range of strategies for tree removal. Depending on the size and location of the tree, it can be straight felled while others have to be dismantled piece by piece. In some instances a crane will be required. For mature trees it is a good idea to check with the council to see if the tree has a TPO (Tree Preservation Order).

Hedge trimming

Stump grinding

This a process which removes the stump and rootball from the ground. Local knowledge of underground services are helpful if known.

Storm damage

It is important to get your trees assessed by a qualified tree hazard inspector after a storm.
At treeworks.ie we are qualified and equipped to safely control storm damaged trees.

Things to look out for are creaking branches, hanging or broken branches, leaning stems, the ground moving around the lower trunk. If you notice any of these things don’t let anybody go under the tree, stay clear and call a professional.

Tree hazard and risk assessments

The law recognises that “there is no such thing as a safe tree” and uses the term of ‘‘reasonably foreseeable” for incidents where a tree has caused damage. Getting a tree report fulfils part of your duty of care under the Occupier’s Liability Act.

Ideally trees would be left alone to live in peace but as we have to live around them it is important that they are in a safe condition. As a qualified tree hazard inspector I can assess your trees from the ground or up in the tree for structural defects, fungal infections and storm damage. A risk assessment and recommendations can be then drawn up.
